Welcome to Kenya, a nation in East Africa, officially known as the Republic of Kenya. It is a member of the African Union and has a population of more than 47.5 million people making it the 27th most populous country in the world and 7th most populous in Africa.

The country is known for its scenic landscapes, vast wildlife preserves, its excellence in Olympic sports such as long-distance running, some of the best coffee in the world with undertones of black currant, its beautiful beaches in the coastal town of Mombasa, the country’s 2nd most populous city, and the world-renowned Maasai Mara Tribe, famous for their unique culture, attire, and traditional jumping dance, which is part competition, part courtship. The Maasai Mara Game Reserve in southern Kenya is named in honor of the tribe that still lives there.

You will begin your journey to this beautiful land in the capital city of Nairobi, the only capital city in the world that is home to a national park. It’s a vibrant and bustling metropolis that serves as a cultural, economic, and political hub in East Africa. With a population of over 4 million people, Nairobi is a melting pot of different cultures and various ethnic groups. The city is known for its rich history, diverse architecture, thriving economy, and exuberant nightlife. There are major banks, popular fast-food joints and nearly everything you can buy back in the U.S. There’s no need to drag an oversized suitcase halfway around the world. You’ll be OK.

One of the highlights of this safari tour is our visit to the Masai Mara Game Reserve, a place unchanged by the passage of time. The Masai Mara is essential Africa. Everyone who travels here says that ‘Africa gets into your blood’. They’re not wrong. Rugged and dramatic, this is a wilderness of emotion, survival and inspiration; with wildlife drama unravelling before you at every turn. Often raw and sometimes violent, this wildlife spectacle is there before your very eyes.

The Masai Mara is home to the Great Migration, which is one of the world’s most quintessential wildlife experiences. Every year, enormous herds of wildebeest, zebra, and other antelope species make a grand circuit across the plains from the Serengeti in north-central Tanzania into Kenya's Maasai Mara and back, following the new grass that sprouts with the seasonal rains. A host of predators, including the Mara’s abundant lions, follow in pursuit, ensuring their own survival by targeting weaker members of the herds. It’s a classic game of the survival of the fittest.

Besides the Masai Mara, we will venture into 3 National Parks, each one its own special kind of experience. We also spend time in Lake Naivasha, the only freshwater lake in the Great Rift Valley, host to abundant wildlife, including more than 1,500 hippos and over 400 species of birds.

If you love nature and have ever dreamed of encountering the majestic Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—there’s no better place to tick off this ultimate safari bucket list than Kenya.

DAY 4 - June 17: A day in Nairobi

After breakfast, take the time to rest and get adjusted to the time zone. There will be an option to go to the Nairobi City Market, an historic market that’s been around since the early 1930s and is popular among both locals and travelers. Nairobi residents appreciate the variety of meat products, fresh produce, and spices available while travelers enjoy browsing the local arts & crafts as well as the florists on-site with flower arrangements for all occasions. This will be an opportunity to engage with some of the local vendors on-site. Bargaining is expected here, so if you find something that catches your eye, don’t be shy to haggle! Start with a lower offer and be prepared to meet the vendor halfway. There is also a section here with restaurants serving local dishes for the lunchtime crowds. This afternoon, there will be an option to visit Kazuri Beads Factory. What began in 1975 as a small workshop in a back garden with two employed disadvantaged women then became in 1988 an operation with more than 100 women, especially single mothers with no source of income. It became a social gathering of women who were trained and applied their skills to produce unique and beautiful beads and jewelry. It became a place of female empowerment. The beads themselves are made with clay from the Mt. Kenya area giving them authenticity to their craft. Today Kazuri, the Swahili word for 'small and beautiful' produces a wide range of handmade, hand-painted ceramic jewelry that shines with a kaleidoscope of African colors and Kenyan art that reflects a culture and appeal to a worldwide fashion market. Every necklace, bracelet, and earring carry the essence of its maker's dedication and creativity, making it truly one-of-a-kind. By working with Kazuri, these talented artisans gain financial independence, support their families, and contribute to the betterment of their communities. Meal — (B)

The Valley is a magnificent trench that has been formed by the shifting of tectonic plates over millions of years. It is not only a geological phenomenon, but also a place of immense beauty and natural diversity, with a fascinating history waiting to be explored. Check in at the lodge for lunch. An optional boat ride can be organized by our guide within Lake Naivasha for a minimal cost. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake and located at the highest point of the Kenyan Rift Valley at 6,181 ft. in a complex geological combination of volcanic rocks and sedimentary deposits from a larger Pleistocene Era lake. There will be optional excursions available to choose from should you wish to participate: a hot air balloon ride over the Reserve or a visit to a Maasai tribal village, arguably the most iconic tribal group in all of Africa. The Maasai, who populate vast areas of Southern areas of Kenya are the dominant ethnic group surrounding the Masai Mara. This nomadic warrior tribe which once held vast swathes of pre-colonial Kenya, still retain many of their traditions as they live largely untouched by modern day civilization. So why visit a Maasai village? This would be an opportunity to interact with the Maasai and get a firsthand glimpse into their culture, customs, and practices. Discover a unique way of life!
